AT first glance 19th century political activist Emma Goldman (1869-1940) would seem a peculiar inspiration for a modern punk song.

However, at closer inspection the Jewish American feminist's advocation for freedom of expression, sexual freedom and birth control, equality and independence for women still resonates clearly within modern gender politics.
On Monday Newcastle punk band Boudicca released their new single Emma, as a way of shining a spotlight on "the high priestess of anarchy's" revolutionary life and work.
"Emma Goldman was, for all of us, a go-to to write a song about because she was steadfast in her beliefs and her lifestyle," Boudicca bassist Tegan Kinder said. "She's a completely revolutionary woman.
"In anarchism and feminism she's one of the greats and she's not very well known at the moment and we'd like to change that."
Boudicca vocalist Madeleine Mitchell is a high school history and English teacher and most of the tracks on the five-piece's upcoming debut album Tapestry are inspired by female historical figures. These include Ned Kelly's mother Ellen and Ancient Roman woman Fulvia, as well as songs about Indigenous women and one inspired by Henry Lawson's poem The Drover's Wife.
"It's a very powerful record, and Maddie in writing it, has really shown her passion for history and it focuses on who she finds important," Kinder said.
Tapestry was recorded at Marrickville's The Pet Food Factory by Frenzal Rhomb frontman Jay Whalley. Boudicca struck up a friendship with Whalley after supporting Frenzal Rhomb at various shows. Boudicca has also opened for red-hot Melbourne punk band Amyl & The Sniffers.
"He's just a super down-to-earth person and loves punk rock, so he's super willing to talk to anybody," Kinder said. "For someone who's in such a world renown punk band, you wouldn't guess it from the way he acts around everybody."
Boudicca formed in 2017 with original members Kinder, Mitchell and drummer Sam Stephens. Guitarist Nic Quinlan joined for their self-titled first EP in 2018, before Boudicca morphed towards a heavier metal sound with the acquisition of guitarist Jacob Cummins during the writing of Tapestry.
Boudicca plan to drop another two singles and music videos before Tapestry is released in July.
FORD DRIVES IN
FINALLY the international touring circuit seems to be regaining some momentum. Following on from next month's Under The Southern Stars gig featuring Cheap Trick and Bush, legendary US bluesman Robben Ford has announced he is returning for his first Australian tour since 2014.
The 70-year-old, who has collaborated with the likes of George Harrison, Joni Mitchell and Miles Davis, will perform at Lizotte's on May 19.
HUSKII HYPE
THE release of the album Antihero by Wollongong rapper Huskii last week has created quite the buzz in Australian hip-hop circles.
Huskii, aka Ben Hayden, has had a well-publicised battle with the law, drug addiction and mental health and he channels his fractured history into Antihero's singles Heroin Rap and Ruin My Life.
Newcastle audiences can discover if the hype is justified when Huskii plays the Cambridge Hotel on April 20.
COUNTRY ROAD
NEWCASTLE'S self-confessed "dad rocker" Lachlan X. Morris has revealed a new country direction for his forthcoming single Rocky Road.
"It's a rambunctious country-soaked number that gave me a chance to write some slide 'geet' parts into a tune," Morris said.
Rocky Road is out on March 11 just in time for Morris' show at the Stag & Hunter Hotel on March 18.
RIGGED UP
THE Stag & Hunter Hotel will continue to keep the rock'n'roll flowing with Brisbane band The Delta Riggs secured for a Great Southern Nights gig on April 7.
The Delta Riggs have been relatively quiet since their 2019 album Modern Pressure, but the release of new single Talking In Your Sleep signals the four-piece's intent to get back on the road in 2022.
SNOWFISH LAUNCH
LAKE Macquarie band of brothers, Snowfish, sound like they're onto a winning sound on their latest single Burn From Within. The track harks back to the bombast of early Muse before frontman Jordan Rodrigues signs off with a epic guitar solo.
Snowfish are hosting a Youtube watch party for the Burn From Within video at 5pm on Friday.
It'll be worth a look.
