The Herald reported on Monday that the postponed Supercars round was being earmarked for May 20-22, dates assigned to an event at Winton Motor Raceway in Victoria, with the elected council poised to vote on the matter on Tuesday night.
Council chief executive officer Jeremy Bath had said in a memo to councillors on Friday that "I hope to have a date for you Monday".
But Supercars Australia on Tuesday morning advised City of Newcastle and Destination NSW that it wished to further discuss the matter with its board with a view to bringing the race to the city in 2022.
IN THE NEWS:
"Therefore the council will not be asked to consider a date for the race at the February council meeting," council said in a statement.
The decision delay effectively rules out the race being held in May.
The matter now won't return to the elected council at least until it meets again in March and a five week period is needed for the track bump-in. The NSW calendar is also already quite full for the month with the Bathurst 12-hour set down for May 15 and Vivid Sydney kicking off on May 27.
Supercars said it was still in discussions with Destination NSW and Newcastle council about an appropriate date, with the latter looking to lock in the timing as soon as possible.
