Danielle Sheryl Erica Beutel, 43, has been sentenced to 10 years in jail for the "brutal, sustained and senseless killing" of Mr Hastie in April 2019.

Suffering a psychotic illness exacerbated by substance abuse, Beutel claimed Mr Hastie was a pedophile and stealing her fetuses before trying to get a "confession".

Police found audio of "interrogations" on Beutel's phone in which 63-year-old Mr Hastie was struck almost 250 times before later succumbing to his injuries.

Mr Hastie's sister said he was a sweet soul but paid a tragic price for it, claiming he had let neighbour Beutel move into his house at Maleny, north of Brisbane.

"Colin's generous nature allowed the accused to live in his home but his kindness resulted in his tragic passing," she said in a victim impact statement read in Supreme Court on Thursday.

"(Beutel) inflicted injuries to Colin over a period of time ... resulting in my brother's death ... not the result of a single incident.

"This is incomprehensible and it continues to haunt me. I am broken."

The court heard Beutel had been seen behaving erratically and repeatedly punching her friend Mr Hastie up to six days before his death, telling witnesses he was in a pedophile ring and "deserved to be hurt".

She accused Mr Hastie of stealing 16 fetuses from her body to create a "superior race" and "humans for a pedophile ring" in a Brisbane lab.

She also claimed Mr Hastie had held her down and injected her with the SARS virus and mercury.

The court heard in the days before his death a woman's voice could be heard in the background when Mr Hastie rang a Maleny bank and tried to withdraw $150,000.

When Mr Hastie went to the bank the next day in an attempt to withdraw $100,000 in cash, the manager saw the 63-year-old had facial bruising.

Mr Hastie's autopsy revealed his injuries were consistent with being struck with a broom stick or a metal rod and that he had died from complications from multiple blunt force injuries.

Beutel repeated her bizarre claims about Mr Hastie when interviewed by police after his body was found at his home.

Police discovered her phone audio of 13 recordings over two days that included 248 "striking sounds" and Mr Hastie begging not to be hit any more.

The court heard Beutel was suffering from a serious mental illness at the time that caused a psychosis made worse by alcohol and drugs.

Beutel's psychosis is in remission after ongoing treatment in custody.

She was considered fit for trial in a Mental Health Court in 2021 and pleaded guilty to manslaughter.

Justice Paul Freeburn said Beutel was totally detached from reality at the time and it had led to the death of an innocent man.

Beutel's1220 days spent in custody - more than three years - was considered time served in her 10-year sentence.

She received a serious violent offender declaration so must serve 80 per cent of the sentence before eligible for parole.
