The highest temperature in Australia was 50.7 degrees Celsius recorded in Oodnadatta, South Australia, in 1960.
Bourke, in far west NSW, recorded just a degree cooler when it hit 49.7 in 1878.
In more recent times Port Augusta, South Australia, hit 49.5 in 2019, it was a hot year for the state with Port Pirie hitting 48.6 and Port Lincoln topping at 48.3.
Murray Bridge, Victor Harbour, Cleve and Kingscote also all feature in the 2019 records for SA, with numbers all above 45 degrees Celsius.
The following year Penrith in western Sydney topped 48.9, while the nation's capital, Canberra, topped at 44 degrees Celsius that same year, 2020.
