LIVE caught up with the singer in the Kiwi-born, Australian-based band ahead of the band’s epic 31-date national tour, which takes them from north Queensland to Melbourne, Adelaide and even across the Nullarbor to Perth.
Some might find the more than six-week run of dates daunting but Hume is champing at the bit to hit the road and have Evermore’s sound bring a smile to audience’s faces.
‘‘A lot of the new album [Follow The Sun] is very up-tempo and upbeat and has this optimism and excitement that we wanted in our concerts,’’ he said.
‘‘I think people are going to walk away from our shows feeling really excited and that’s kind of what we’re going for.
‘‘We want to brighten someone’s week and make them excited about life, because there’s enough negativity out there in the world.’’
It’s no surprise Hume is in a good mood. He’s been in the band with brother Peter since the late ’90s and released three platinum-selling albums, Dreams (2004), Real Life (2006), Truth of the World: Welcome to the Show (2009) and last year’s Follow The Sun.
On top of that, he recently married, a life-changing event which he agreed has permeated his songs.
‘‘I think that naturally, things you go through in life influence the music that you write and you know. We started the band when we were quite young so it’s kind of like people are going on a journey with us as well,’’ he said.
‘‘Finding the person for you and getting married is obviously going to come through in some of the songs, like Hey My Love, that capture that kind of personal side of things.
‘‘I guess music has the ability to tap into those core emotions that we go through so there definitely is an endless supply of inspiration.’’
Hey My Love has become an inspiration in itself after the band issued a call to fans to submit pictures for the clip via Instagram.
Parts one and two of the clip have already been completed, with part three on the
way. It combines footage of the Hume brothers singing and playing ukulele interspersed with fan-submitted pictures reflecting the loved-up theme of the song.
The 1000 or so images are of more than just romantic love (though there are plenty of canoodling couples): there is everything from paper cranes, kids under brollies, horses nose to nose and dogs on the beach to cheeseburgers, biscuits and other tempting treats.
For Hume, a recent newcomer to the social media site, the fan involvement in the clip was about reaching out.
‘‘We love to capture that connection between us and our audience and making them part of what we’re doing,’’ he said.
‘‘This is just another way to do that, it really suits that particular song. It’s such a love-centred song I suppose.
‘‘It was written on the ukulele and it has that vibe that kind of suits the photos that people have taken.’’
Hume said social media sites were an ‘‘amazing tool’’ to connect with fans across the country and the world.
‘‘I think it’s silly not to take those opportunities or try and use social media in a creative way that expresses something or makes sense for a musician. I think it is a really cool crossover of the two things,’’ he said.
‘‘We want to make sure we’re not just stuck in the old ways of doing things and are flexible and are always pushing for new ground and doing something that hasn’t been done before.’’
Though he’s keen to push the band forward, Hume understands the attachment of fans to hits such as Light Surrounding You and Running.
‘‘We definitely play the favourites, it’s probably 50-50 new songs and old songs; we make sure we play all the ones people want and know and sometimes an obscure one ... because I guess I don’t go to a U2 concert and expect them not to play With or Without You or Beautiful Day or something, I would literally ask for a refund,’’ he said.
‘‘We love playing the songs that people sing along to, it’s just such a great thing to be part of and we’re very blessed that people know our music to that point to sing along to.’’
Evermore play at The Cambridge Hotel on May 30.
