Perhaps no one will ever cause a fashion frenzy at the Melbourne Cup Carnival quite like Jean Shrimpton and her lovely legs.
The British model sparked an uproar when she dared to wear a mini dress, finishing five inches above her knees, to Derby Day in 1965.
No stockings, gloves or hat - outrageous.
Almost 50-years on, no one would question Shrimpton’s ensemble today. Shrimpton’s look would be considered conservative compared with the sea of dress cut-outs, bare midriffs and short hemlines at Flemington during Cup week.
Let’s take a look at some recent notable fashion moments ahead of the Melbourne Cup Carnival, which begins with Derby Day on Saturday:
Melbourne Cup 2003 - ’It girl’ Paris Hilton looked like she was going clubbing rather than to the races with a blingy, skimpy top and Rob Mills on her arm.
Derby Day 2006 - Movie star Kate Bosworth channels the 1920s with a black draped gown and beaded headpiece.
Melbourne Cup 2006 - Bec Hewitt wears a Fendi short suit and matching Bettina Liano bra top, flashing flesh just below her breasts and breaking Victoria Racing Club rules.
Melbourne Cup 2008 - Socialite Lillian Frank wears a birdcage hat in the birdcage, by milliner Kerry Stanley.
Melbourne Cup 2011 - Brynne Edelsten turns heads in a multi-coloured cocktail dress and headpiece fashioned from large feathers.
Melbourne Cup 2011 - Model Ashley Hart wears a turban-esque headpiece with a pale pink shirt and salmon skirt.
Melbourne Cup 2011 - Singer Enrique Iglesias doesn’t get the dresscode memo and rocks up to the birdcage in jeans, a cap and boots.
Oaks Day 2011 - Style icon Sarah Jessica Parker breaks with tradition and opts not to wear a hat. But she won praise for her demure yet modern look, combining a Serge Normant art deco-inspired jewelled comb, baby pink Jonathan Saunders dress, silver Antonio Berardi jacket and Manolo Blahnik shoes.
Derby Day 2012 - Oscar winning Australian star Nicole Kidman was a picture of elegance in a My Fair Lady inspired L’Wren Scott figure-hugging white-lace gown, paired with wide-brimmed hat made from recycled plastic bottles by British milliner, Stephen Jones.
Derby Day 2013 - Australian model Lara Bingle breaks Victoria Racing Club rules by baring her toned midriff (as well as low cut top) in the birdcage as she attends the Lavazza marquee.
Derby Day 2013 - Naomi Campbell steals the spotlight in true supermodel style, arriving late to the Lexus marquee just as the main race was being run. She epitomised classic cool in a strapless Christian Dior black and white dress and Philip Treacy hat.
Oaks Day 2013 - Canadian supermodel Coco Rocha harnesses the glammed up alien look when she especially requests Melbourne designer Anthony Capon’s gold lace peplum jacket.
