It was a really big thing for me to go to the Earthquake Relief concert. All the big bands were playing: Angels, Midnight Oil, Crowded House, etc.
I especially wanted to see Split Enz because they had just reformed. I was too young to see them the first time around.
It was like all of Newcastle had come out for the concert because tickets were so cheap and everyone needed a good time after the earthquake.
We were pretty close to the front. I knew Kym Maslin the girl in the picture from Newcastle High School.
We didn’t hang out in the same crowd but when I saw her I just reached out to say hi.
I am sitting on my mate Tom Brown’s shoulders and she is on her boyfriend Scott’s shoulders. You couldn’t move without bumping into someone you knew. It was a hot day so
I had my shirt off but when you are a kid, any excuse to get your shirt off in front of the girls.
Newcastle is still a big country town after the earthquake. I still run into mates wherever I go.
I now run a glass and aluminium company in Stockton and have always lived around water in Newcastle.
