A combination of circus, burlesque and vaudeville inspired by the absinthe-drenched cabarets of late 19th century Europe, Absinthe opened under the specially-imported Belgian spiegeltent on the forecourt of the Civic Theatre on Tuesday.
With a cast of about 20, including host The Gazillionaire with sidekick Penny and the infamous Green Fairy, the show was due to run until March 1. But on Thursday 20 more shows were added to give more Novocastrians a chance to see the heady performance by March 15.
The extension follows the 2013 tour of Spiegelworld’s Empire, during which more than 14,000 Novocastrians attended its four-week, 31-performance run, which generated $1.2 million at the box office, making it the highest grossing show of its kind to visit the city.
Absinthe by Spiegelworld runs until March 15 under the spiegeltent at Wheeler Place. It is recommended for ages 15 and above.
The performance features some nudity and strong language. Tickets for the new and final shows go on sale February 20 at Ticketek.
