YHA confirmed on Monday that it purchased the Pacific Street property in late January, keeping the east end accommodation within its network of 90 hostels around the country.
The hostel has been operating as cheap accommodation for travellers for almost two decades.
YHA Australia boss Julian Ledger confirmed the January 29 purchase in a statement on Monday.
“YHA is proud to be the new owner of Newcastle Beach YHA, with its unique location and heritage aspects, and is committed to promotion of Newcastle as a thriving tourism destination,” Mr Ledger said.
The building that now offers 99 beds to backpackers was built in 1911 and features a large ballroom that has become a common area.
Club members handed the site over for use as a nurses’ home during World War I, long before Novocastrians Alida and Brien Cornwell bought it in 1997 to renovate it for backpackers.
