Finnish media outlet Yle Sporten cited Brazilian media in reporting on Sunday that Ribeiro, a former IFK Mariehamn player, fell ill during a match for Brazilian club Friburguense. He was reportedly rushed to hospital, where he later died. Yle Sporten later reported that heart problems were believed to be behind the Brazilian’s death.
Ribeiro played six A-League games, including three starts, for Newcastle in the 2012-13 season. The attacking midfielder was a popular figure among Jets teammates, who paid tribute to him on social media.
Taylor Regan posted: “RIP Bernardo Ribeiro. Taken from this world way to young. Pleasure to play alongside you.”
Jets keeper Mark Birighitti said: “Bernardo Ribeiro. I'm so deeply saddened that you're no longer with us. My prayers go out to your family and friends. RIP my brother.”
