“That gig was unreal,” he told the Lakes Mail this week.
“To get up on stage in front of about 100 people, and to play our music was a really good feeling.”
He’s anticipating a much bigger reaction – on stage and in the audience – when Below Oceans return for “the second chapter”, at Morisset PCYC this Saturday night.
This time, seven bands will feature in the show.
Newcastle band, The Sign of Four, has top billing.
According to the band’s website, the music they play is described variously as death core, heavy groove, and even chaotic death.
Ellis said Below Oceans had been busy since their performance at Morisset PCYC in February.
“We’ve been around for over a year now, and had a few line-up changes,” he said.
The band comprises Jordan Blaire (vocals), Dylan Farrell (guitar and clean vocals), Sean Doyle (bass) and Ellis (drums).
“We’ve been gigging around Newcastle and Sydney a lot more, and we’ve just released our debut EP,” Ellis said.
The six-track EP, From Within the Broken, was a good snapshot of the band’s sound and message, he said.
“Jordan writes songs about mental illness to spread the message that it’s alright to feel like that.”
The idea was to let young listeners know that it was better to raise any mental health concerns with the appropriate people in their lives, rather than to bottle up those concerns and internalise them, he said.
“We started working on the EP in December, so we’re pretty stoked to get it out there.”
Ellis said the band was looking forward to the gig.
“We’ve got a lot more songs, and we’re better known now. It should be good.”
Also on the bill are Atlantis of the Sky, Trojan, The Dirac Sea, Of Divinity and Final Form.
Doors open at 4.30pm, and tickets cost $10.
The gig is an alcohol- and drug-free event, and will be fully supervised.
“I think it will be pretty heavy, and definitely a mosh-worthy gig,” Ellis said.
