New members are welcome as well as guests.
With over 200 residents the course now has very active social participation along with strong involvement with the club. Kevin Jackson (a resident of Sugar Valley) has recently been elected club president along with many other resident and non-resident committee members.
On the social front, in the last month the Sugar Valley Resident’s Golf Course Committee for the preservation, growth and general betterment of the Sugar Valley Golf Course and Club was established.
The committee (headed by former Newcastle Falcons CEO Dennis Kibble and made up entirely of residents) works closely with the golf club and Dave Johnson the course superintendent on improvement initiatives, volunteering, social programs and social player growth.
They are also attracting local hole sponsors as part of an initiative to replace all the signage around the course.
Another initiative of the social group is a volunteer group to extend the operating hours of the club throughout summer to take advantage of the extended daylight.
"The idea is that people can come at first light or the very end of the day when its cooler or before/after work and still play a round – the residents are here 24 hours a day so it makes perfect sense for us to man the club before staff arrive or after they leave for the day," resident Peter Turvey said. The course will now reopen on Mondays thanks to the initiative starting in December.
"The course is looking the best it has in years, with all credit to the course superintendent Dave Johnson," club president Kevin Jackson said.
"We're open for business, looking for new members and social players – its a terrific time of year to be out playing, the greens are magnificent."
The course is great value at $20 a round or $15 on Mondays and Tuesdays. Members and social members pay just $5, with carts available subject to availability.
“People who played here years ago won't recognise it and should come out and have a go,” course superintendent Dave Johnson said.
The course is open seven days in daylight hours from December and can be found at Boundary Road West Wallsend. Phone 4953 2891 or check it out on Facebook (Sugarvalleygolf).
