A host of Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and Hunter Valley restaurants, cafes and caterers were among the 211 restaurants and 68 caterers in the running for the national awards, announced in Brisbane this week.
Charlestown Square’s Cafe Salt won best coffee shop/tea house, while perennial award-winner The Old George and Dragon Restaurant, East Maitland, won best European restaurant. Muchos Mexican, The Junction, was also recognised as best Mexican restaurant.
Cafe Salt opened in August 2010 and has already gained a loyal following of regulars. Headed by manager Karyn Fell and chef Brad Harris, the Cafe Salt team was yesterday celebrating its win, which they said was testament to their tasty food and friendly service.
“Restaurant & Catering congratulates all the winners and finalists. Their achievement in providing great food and great service is in itself a wonderful contribution to the industry,’’ the organisation’s chief executive John Hart said.
