Its history is in coal mining with George Brown striking coal in the area in the late 1800s, which then led to collieries being established in East Greta, Stanford Merthyr, Pelaw Main, Abermain and Aberdare.
It is home to Turner Park, a large regional sporting complex comprising football and cricket fields, tennis courts, an athletics track and parkland.

It is also situated approximately 15 kilometres’ drive to Pokolbin and Hunter Valley wine country, around 30km to Maitland and 150km from Newcastle.

Aberdare is a small suburb just 15 minutes’ from beautiful wine country, 45 minutes to Newcastle and two hours to Sydney.
Coal mining created the land boom of 1903-23 and by 1926 Cessnock had a population of 12,000 within a one mile radius.
The area came into its own in the period 1939 to 1945 when coalminers broke all production records.
Aberdare is a close-knit community with lovely traditional style homes set on generous-sized blocks and a perfect place to raise your family.
The surrounding bushland gives Aberdare a peaceful laidback feeling just minutes from Cessnock’s Cental Business District.
