It’s part of a number of changes for the school (which has been operating successfully for over 25 years in Morisset) in 2018 including new building, programs and open days.
FSDance and College of Creative Arts is a multi-space arts facility being developed at Unit 1, 5 Kam Close in Morisset’s Industrial Estate. Owner director Fiona Donaldson purchased the building two years ago.
The building incorporates not only FSDance, but also a customised facility catering for other artisitic pursuits like drama, singing, music, fine art, yoga and pilates.
“I want to create an inclusive space which taps into the area’s artistic needs,” Fiona said. “I see huge overlap in performance training.
“Our building renovations, once completed, will cover nearly 900sqm across two storeys which is huge.
“We have a drama teacher coming in this year. A singing teacher is looking to rent out another space. They will be utililising our dance studios which can be customised to individual needs.
“We encourage other teaching arts practitioners to contact us because the environment will be very inclusive and there is a ready made market to tap into.
“Dance parents, who often are running around dropping off kids, can perhaps do a yoga or pilates class themselves, or grab a coffee and chill at our cafe.
Coinciding with the name change and new building is a change in programming.
“Instead of offering single classes in all dance genres (as Fiona’s Studio of Dance always did), we have created programs that are structured to take in all age groups from pre-school to pre-professional that are linked together and designed to expose kids to dance, nurture their needs and give them a sense of progression,” Fiona explained.
“Our pre-school program is called ‘Imagine’, our primary school program is ‘Aspire’ and our high school program is called ‘Elevate’.
“Each program is multi-level offering students a range of dance choices that meet their needs, be it recreational or more career focused.
“Our ‘Elevate and Transition’ program offers a full-time pathway to Cert IV and Diploma in Dance if students wish to go down that route.
“In between, students can experience all genres at whatever level they choose from once-a-week single classes right through to groups, eisteddfods and exams.”
In another first this year, FSDance will hold two open days – on Monday, January 29 and Tuesday, January 30.
Both days will run from 10am to 6pm with Monday offering free classes across every dance genre for any school aged child from five upwards.
“They can do every class if they wish, for free, and experience the energy and culture of the school,” Fiona said.
“Parents meanwhile on either day can check out the new building, talk to teachers, discuss programs, enrol if they want, pick up or order uniforms and so on.
Normal after school regular term classes kick off Monday February 5.
