THE Ashes may well have been run and won over summer, but Australia and England are still going head-to-head on the cricket field.
Now, it’s the veterans turn with over-70 teams from both nations currently on tour and University of Newcastle professor John Fryer part of the five-match series.
Fryer, not for the first time, will line-up for the Australians as they host the UK squad at Geelong’s Kardinia Park on Thursday, Brisbane this Sunday and followed by two more games in Queensland next week.
The opening fixture took place at Adelaide’s Railway Oval on the weekend.
* FORMER Test player Andrew Symonds will be the guest speaker for Newcastle City’s sportsman’s lunch at the Albion Hotel on Friday, March 23.

* STILL on one-time Australian representatives and it was Jim deCourcy who was skipper of Wests, then known as Lambton-New Lambton, when the club claimed the Newcastle district first grade minor premiership in 1965-1966.
This Saturday the competition-leading Rosellas can clinch the same prize for the first time since.
Wests, defending 269 against semi-final challengers University (2-58), are one point ahead of second-placed Merewether, who have already lost first-innings to Toronto with an outright result up for grabs on day two.
* NEWCASTLE City and Suburban semi-finals start this weekend with two players in top form. Jimmy’s XI Aaron Witt (D4 grade) and Merewether’s Adam Britt (KOFM Cup) made 235 and took 9-11 respectively in big last-round wins.
