Up to 30 players from the district competition will take part in the 2018-2019 knockout competition with Lake Mac Attack joining defending champions the Newcastle Blasters. Both sides, most likely to be selected geographically from the existing 12 district clubs, are set to face off in a derby-style opening round on October 7.
Organisers are hopeful of using the newly constructed Cameron Park facility for the fixture. The Hunter Hitmen and Central Coast Rush are the other two squads in one of the state’s two northern pools. Lake Mac Attack replace Riverina’s Murray Valley as one of the 16 participating outfits.
NDCA chairman Paul Marjoribanks said this move would allow more cricketers from the region to play at the next level, push for higher honours and potentially make a final at the SCG.
The Sydney-based NSW Premier T20 Cup, featuring the Newcastle Steel, follows in November and December.
Meanwhile, Neil McDonald has taken over from Dave Szumowski as Cricket NSW’s development leader for Northern NSW.
