BUT we can’t reduce parking penalties now (“Fine line”, Herald 28/6)! How else will we pay for Supercars?
Peter Ronne, Woodberry
I BELIEVE Lake Macquarie City Council is treating Toronto with utter contempt. They are spending ratepayers’ money to push a development application for a six-story apartment development on foreshore parkland adjacent to the Royal Motor Yacht Club (“Complex for foreshore”, Herald 24/4). Approving this development will reduce the amount of foreshore parkland available for passive recreation for both residents and visitors. Our community understands that once foreshore green space is removed by development, this space is gone forever. Would the council allow foreshore parkland at Speers Point or Warners Bay to be permanently removed by the imposition of high-rise development?

IN REPLY to Geoff Black (Short Takes 28/6): as a result of behaviour of the Catholic Church, Glen Walsh's brother and sister, stated, they'll never walk into a Catholic Church ever again. They, and I've little doubt many others.

REGARDING Christopher Saunders’ comments (“Station operator turns up the volume”, Herald ) about the noise from Newcastle Station,he states that the site will “push the envelope”. I believe the acoustic impact statement submitted to council for the proposal’s approval says significant acoustic impacts will not arise from the location, noting its position relative to sensitive receivers. Let’s hope Mr Saunders does not get to decide what is appropriate.

GET ready for the poo explosion now disposable plastic bags are becoming an item of the past. We'll need someone to design disposable shoes and thongs to combat this mounting poo problem.

HMAS Newcastle is scheduled to arrive in her home port this Saturday. As per tradition, Fort Scratchley’s number two gun will fire a seven-round welcoming salute. With HMAS Newcastle scheduled for decommissioning sometime next year, this will probably be the second-last time the vessel will be in our city. The fort’s gates will be open from 8.30am and everyone is welcome to be at the fort for the arrival and salute.

IT IS estimated India has 30 million sacred cows. Will the champions of climate change call for the slaughter of these farting and belching gods, or is it just our farmers responsible for destroying the planet?
Steve Barnett, Fingal Bay
TRAFFIC in Newcastle and parking is at an all-time high and having patience is so necessary. Twice so far I've been cut off, and it has been by work utilities. It’s no different from bullying, so slow down and be patient or somebody is going to get hurt.
