A Merewether home that had been in the same family for over 50 years and sits on a corner block nearly 2000 squares metres in size has been secured for $3.2 million.
Takamuna, meaning “house on the hill”, enjoys expansive ocean, harbour and city views as well as expansive grounds at 8 Kempster Road.
The five-bedroom home was reportedly built in 1924 for an archdeacon.
It was converted to flats before being purchased in the 1960s by Jim and Pam Todhunter, who raised their seven children there. It was listed for sale through PRDnationwide in June.
The property was headed for auction on August 8 but was bought prior by a local family intending to restore it.

QUICK MOVING
A large penthouse apartment with views of Newcastle beach and its own private rooftop garden was bought within one week of hitting the market.
Walkom Real Estate’s Greg Handsaker described the top floor apartment at 38 Zaara Street as “a one off”.
It sold for an undisclosed sum believed to be just over $3 million.
STREET HIGH
A new sale mark is believed to have been set for Lakeview Street in Speers Point after a renovated circa 1910 residence at No.109 was secured before auction for an undisclosed price.
The four-bedroom home was marketed by McKiernan Real Estate and is believed to have sold within its guide of $950,000 to $1,040,000.

The previous highest sale for the street was $903,000, according to Australian Property Monitors data.
Meanwhile, the $980,000 sale of a renovated four-bedroom home in Adamstown Heights’ Claremont Avenue marketed by Robinson Property is the second-highest for its street, according to APM data. A home sold for $1.015 million last year.
