Lake Macquarie City Council has begun refurbishing the fire-damaged kiosk at Redhead Surf Life Saving Club but it is unlikely to be operating before summer.
The popular beachside eatery sustained extensive damage when it was ravaged by fire in May 2017 and has been closed ever since.
A temporary cafe was set-up by another operator outside the club last December in a shipping container and has remained opened throughout the year.
But work started on the refurbishment of the old kiosk inside the clubhouse on Monday and will allow for the future lease and fitout of the space once completed.
“The works to refurbish the space are expected to be completed by the end of this year, however Redhead Surf Life Saving Club will then need to appoint an operator to run the kiosk and undertake a final fit out of equipment and furniture, so it may still be some time before the kiosk reopens to the community,” the council’s community assets section manager, Brendan Callander, said.
“Prior to the fire in 2017, the Redhead Surf Life Saving Club cafe was a popular beachside eatery that catered to the locals and tourists that frequent Redhead Beach.
“We would like to thank the community of Redhead for their patience and understanding throughout this project.”
