LAKE Macquarie City Council should be congratulated on the free compost give away last weekend. Very well organised and an excellent product. Happy gardening.

I NOTE Robin Hopps' contribution of a comment from 1989 that the IPCC was not making subjective predictions of future temperature increases at that time (Letters, 18/6). I can reassure Robin that the modelling 30 years later has provided the specialists in this field a high degree of confidence, and the most recent IPCC Special Report into Global Warming of 1.5 degrees Celcius published in 2015 states that "Human activities are estimated to have caused approximately 1 degree of global warming above pre-industrial levels, with a likely range of 0.8 degrees to 1.2 degrees. Global warming is likely to reach 1.5 degrees between 2030 and 2052 if it continues to increase at the current rate." The report is freely available for both citizens and policymakers to review online.

THAT'S right David Stuart (Short Takes, 17/6): the remuneration tribunal determines wages rises for politicians. I'm wondering though, do they actually have to accept it? A good look would be to turn it down with so many others struggling financially.
Grant Conway, Lambton
I BET some people love Revitalising Newcastle; well maybe hate would be a better word. They decide there's a good show at the Civic Theatre let's go see it, they get into town and find it's like winning the lottery finding a parking space. The New Year's Eve fireworks; same thing - cars driving around looking for parking spaces, giving up and going home in disgust. I think, and a lot of other people are like me, and wonder why wasn't the old rail corridor used and what's the state government not telling us?
Wayne Ridley, Gateshead
MAC Maguire (Short Takes, 18/6), your comment about a great and progressive country if only Labor governments were elected is laughable to say the least. Think how backwards this country would be if only unions were in charge indefinitely.
Tony Cooper, Belmont
EDDIE Niszczot (Short Takes, 18/6), under the Fair Work Act it is also unlawful to discriminate against an employee on the basis of that person's religion. Israel Folau didn't yell out "fire" in a crowded picture theatre or threaten to kill anyone. He quoted the Bible, albeit an unfashionable passage, on social media, the same book used for Scott Morrison to take his oath of office.
Peter Dolan, Lambton
ROBIN Hopps, (Letters, 18/6), let's go for certainty. Fossil is all round muck, from go to whoa. Raymond Parkes (Letters, 18/6), send Ian Plimer's fill-in-the-gap book to the supreme climate authority, year round warriors in the field, the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
Graeme Tychsen, Rankin Park
THE facts in this letter are actual facts, I state this because some may not believe such idiocy is possible.
