Task Group Taji, which began in May 2015 with an initial time frame of two years, delivers training to Iraqi Security Forces based at the Taji military complex northwest of Baghdad.

The combined Australian-New Zealand task group consists of around 300 ADF and 110 NZ Defence Force personnel.

A Defence spokeswoman told AAP on Friday preparations were under way for the next rotation in June, which would have similar responsibilities and size to previous rotations.

However, there has been speculation the ninth rotation could be the last for Australian personnel.

"Future changes to the Australian Defence Force's role in Iraq will be decided by the Australian government in close consultation with Iraq and coalition partners," the spokeswoman said.

The eighth rotation of Task Group Taji assumed command of the mission on December 1 last year and returns in June.

Task Group Taji-8 has progressively handed over responsibility for the delivery of training to Iraqi instructors at the Baghdad Fighting School.

"Task Group Taji-9 will continue to adapt the training and capacity building support provided to Iraqi Security Forces, with an increased focus on training and mentoring of Iraqi military trainers," the Defence spokeswoman said.
