A NSW Police spokesperson said the operation began at 10.30am at a school on Janet Street and was underway.
Wallsend MP Sonia Hornery said she had received reports Callaghan College Jesmond campus students had been evacuated and students were safe in the high school's bini shell.
A spokesperson from Ms Hornery's office said they understood there had been a bomb threat and Callaghan students were waiting for the police dog unit to arrive.
A NSW Police spokesperson said the evacuation was a "precaution".
"There's no serious threat to anyone and all students are safe."
Ms Hornery said students from neighbouring Heaton Public School have "returned to class as normal".
The Department of Education was contacted for comment and directed questions to the police.
