IT'S a shame that Glenn Jones (Letters 13/04) didn't check that "the bulk of the money is sent to private schools". According to the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) annual report on schools, government funding overwhelmingly favours public schools. Every year public schools receive around $45 billion in total government funding, almost $18,000 per student. By contrast private schools receive around $15 billion in funding, just over $10,000 per student. Figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics and the Parliamentary Budget Office concur with the ACARA assessment. With public schools receiving three times the total funding of private schools, and nearly 80 per cent more funding per student, surely it is time to put this myth to bed.

PRIME Minister Scott Morrison spent $185 million reopening, posing for a photo and then closing Christmas Island, but couldn't find a lazy $10 mill or so as an act of goodwill and solidarity with the French to help rebuild their amazing gothic cathedral! Philistinism is alive and well and flourishing under the lNP in the land of Oz.

WHAT has become of the Australia so many died to protect? A footballer expresses his opinion and he gets the sack? Whether we agree with him or not, surely we aren't so politically "correct" that people have lost the right to express their opinion?
George Paris, Rathmines
A CHURCH of England priest and journalist, Giles Fraser, has reminded us that when fire destroyed the old St Paul's Cathedral in London in 1666, a broken headstone was found in the ruins marked with the one word "Resurgam" ("I shall rise again"). A good reminder as we, with Parisians, approach le jour de Paques - Easter Day.

DENNIS Crampton (Letters 17/4), you say Michael Hagan won us a premiership with a team with far less talent? Andrew Johns, Danny Buderus, Ben Kennedy, Billy Peden...should I go on? In reality, we should have won at least three premierships with players like that in the team. I'm not blaming Michael Hagan for not winning another two.
Matt Ophir, Charlestown
WHILE the world commiserates over the accidental burning of the Notre Dame cathedral in Paris that will be rebuilt with donations of already committed billions of dollars, Chinese communist occupiers are part of a modern-day holocaust aimed out wiping out the ethnicity, religion, language, identity and culture of the native Muslim Uyghur (NY Times 13/4).

I CAN'T believe it happened again. On wednesday, this time I was a passenger and didn't see what was happening behind. The wheels start turning, then stop while the "yes-no-yes" decision kicks in. The truck was a huge store delivery type with a very long rigid tray. The driver either stopped or was very slow. The back end of the trailer was still in our side when we got passed. So risky. All this only took three or four seconds.
