St Paul's Primary at Gateshead had intended in 2013 to dig up a time capsule that former parents and friends association president Stephen Vidot and secretary Graham Pritchard had helped bury in 1988.
But it couldn't be located - even with a metal detector- and was thought to be under a new concrete path.
Mr Pritchard said he and Mr Vidot visited the school last year to see if it had been discovered and were "thrilled" to able to guide staff to the correct spot, near three flag poles.
They returned on Thursday to help dig it up and watch as the contents, including a copy of the Newcastle Herald and The Catholic Education Reporter, a staff photograph, artwork and school patch, were discovered.
"They give us the opportunity to reflect back on the time the capsule was buried and renew old friendships," Mr Pritchard said.
Principal Greg Cumming said St Paul's was preparing for a building program and he hoped to bury a new capsule in a year.
