A CHILD has died in the second fatal crash in the region in one day.
Shortly before 1pm on Tuesday, emergency services were called to McCaffrey Drive, New Lambton Heights, following reports a Holden statesman had lost control and hit a power pole.
An eight-year-old girl was treated on the scene by an off-duty nurse and paramedics before being taken to John Hunter Children's Hospital, where she died a short time later.
"Five ambulance crews and a specialist medical team were tasked to the job and arrived within minutes," NSW Ambulance Superintendent Luke Wiseman said.
"Paramedics have assessed two patients, an eight-year-old female and another female approximately in her late 20s.
"The child went into cardiac arrest at the scene and was worked on by paramedics, who have transported her to John Hunter Hospital in a critical condition. Despite best efforts of paramedics and hospital medical staff the young girl passed away.
"This a traumatic job that affects all emergency services who arrived on scene and welfare protocols will be carried out for all paramedics who attended."
The woman was trapped in the vehicle, before being freed and taken to John Hunter Hospital in a serious but stable condition.
The male driver was taken to the Mater Hospital for mandatory testing.
Police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Anyone who may have dashcam footage in the area around the time is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
This was the second fatal crash on Tuesday, after a woman died in a head-on incident on the Pacific Highway at Catherine Hill Bay.
