Newcastle District Cricket Association (NDCA) have taken up a City of Newcastle council option to play at the venue across December and January.
Originally no fixtures had been scheduled for No.1 in the 2019-20 season and this latest change comes after the weekend's Supercars concert, featuring KISS, was cancelled.
Starting this Saturday, district club Newcastle City will host lower-grade matches at the main sportsground.
City's fourth-grade side will shift their upcoming home game against Wallsend to No.1 from outer ground No.5, located in between the netball courts at National Park
It will be the same for the Sabres in third grade the following two-day encounter against Merewether from December 14.
SPORTING DECLARATION: Will Newcastle ever again host big-time cricket?
No plans have been made as yet for senior competitions at No.1 after the Christmas break and City's first grade team will continue using nearby Learmonth Park.
However, junior representative carnivals Ron Arendts Shield (under 11s) and Graeme Malcom Shield (under 14s) will again play at Newcastle's traditional home of cricket during January.
The fence and sight screens recently dismantled at No.1 will not be put back up throughout this period.
"We've been given a small window by council to use No.1 again for cricket," NDCA chairman Paul Marjoribanks said.
"City will play there and [curator] Peter [Terry] said he can get a lower-grade wicket up pretty quickly. There will be no fences and no sight screens.
"The ground is in good nick and it's still better than some parks around the place."
City of Newcastle haven't officially announced what exact works will occur at the facility or when they may start.
"We have met with local cricket officials and are working on their short-term use of No.1 Sportsground into next year," a City of Newcastle spokesperson said on Monday.
Marjoribanks indicated NDCA would hand No.1 back over around February.
