When police and the NSW Police Dog Unit arrested Aaron Wade Griffin on Monday he was allegedly armed with a bayonet.
Mr Griffin, 31, of Fletcher, appeared in court on Tuesday charged with special aggravated break and enter with intent - while armed with a dangerous weapon, two counts of possession of a prohibited weapon, stealing a motor vehicle and possession of a knife in a public place.
He did not enter any pleas or apply for bail and the matter was adjourned until February 6, 2020.
Police allege Mr Griffin went to a home at Shelly Street, Toronto, about 8.50am on Sunday and allegedly threatened a family with a handgun before leaving.
Three adults and two boys, aged two and six, were left shaken but uninjured by the incident, police said.
Lake Macquarie police launched an investigation and searched a home at Redwood Close, Fletcher, where they allegedly seized a stolen car, items of clothing, firearm parts, a taser and other weapons.
Following further inquiries, police went back to the home at Fletcher about 5.15pm on Monday where Mr Griffin was arrested by the NSW Police Dog Unit, who were assisted by Lake Macquarie and Newcastle police. Police allege Mr Griffin was armed with a bayonet at the time of his arrest.
He was taken to Waratah police station and charged with the six offences.
The charge of special aggravated break and enter is reserved for the most serious of break-ins and is generally charged when someone is wounded or a firearm is produced. The charge carries a maximum of 20 years in jail.
