* Victoria will enter a five-day lockdown from 11.59pm on Friday in an effort to contain an outbreak of the UK strain of coronavirus at Melbourne Airport's Holiday Inn.

* The outbreak now tallies 13 people after five new cases were recorded on Friday.

* One of the positive cases is a staffer at an airport cafe, who is believed to have worked while infectious. Up to 5000 people passed through the terminal during the exposure period.

* Victorian Premier Dan Andrews flagged changes to his state's hotel quarantine system. Victoria's weekly international arrival limit was due to increase to 1310 on Monday, but Mr Andrews said he'd rather that number be in the hundreds.

* The Australian Open will proceed without crowds and players will go into a "bubble".

* Supermarkets in Victoria have reinstated purchasing limits on toilet paper and paper towel after anxious shoppers hit the shelves.

* NSW will order anyone who was in Victoria after Friday to isolate until the Victorian stay-at-home order expires, but will not close the border to Victoria. Border residents are exempt from the stay-at-home requirement if they have not been to Melbourne.

* NSW eased restrictions, allowing twice as many customers into cafes and restaurants and scrapping mandatory mask use in a number of settings.

* NSW recorded 26 consecutive days without a local COVID-19 case - two days short of the mark for "eliminating" the virus in the community.

* NSW contact tracers are still hunting the source of a COVID-19 infection in a returned traveller who tested positive two days after completing the required 14 days of hotel quarantine.

* Western Australia agreed to reopen its border to NSW from February 16, but implemented a 72-hour hard border closure with Victoria from 6pm on Friday.

* Masks will no longer be mandatory in WA, with the state to revert to pre-lockdown conditions from midnight on Saturday.

* Queensland will shut its borders to travellers from Greater Melbourne from 1am on Saturday.

* Tasmania will close its border to Victoria from midnight. Returning Tasmanians must quarantine for 14 days. The only other people allowed in will be essential workers.

* The Northern Territory declared Greater Melbourne a hotspot.

* Melbourne-based biotechnology company CSL says the first doses of the Australian-made AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine are on track to be ready by the end of March.

* The prime minister again rejected the idea of federal hotel quarantine.
