Emergency services were called to Wangi Point about 4pm Sunday to reports that a man in his 50s had fallen from a yacht and could not be found.
"A person was knocked overboard by the boom on a sailing boat off Wangi Point," a statement from Marine Rescue Lake Macquarie said.
"Those on board the boat [were] unable to lower the sails so the vessel [had to] continue, with the person in the water unable to be sighted."
A large-scale water and air search was launched including police, Marine Rescue and paramedics. Shortly afterwards the helicopter crew sighted the man and he was pulled from the water.
NSW Ambulance paramedics treated him at the scene, but he was unable to be revived.
An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident has been launched.
A report will now be prepared for the Coroner.
