Brent was on his own road testing his new 4.1m tinnie in galeforce winds last Sunday.
He wasn't really fishing for jew when things started to get interesting.
"I was throwing light 8lb line targeting bream to be honest," Brent said.
"Suddenly the line just starting screaming off, and it was game on.
"I was doing my best not to get busted off.
"I had the tinnie in reverse, steering with my feet being being hammered by wind.
"There was a fair bit going on but I managed to get the fish to the boat after about 20 minutes.
"Then I realised how big it was and how I didn't have a net.
"So I started calling out to people trying to get attention, when this tinnie came round with two young guys in it, and they asked 'what's up?'
"I asked them if they had a net because I had this massive jew next to the boat.
"They didn't have a net, but one of the guys, Charlie Haigh, says he'll jump in, and next minute he launches overboard like a legend.
"They fish tried to take off again, but somehow Charlie managed to get it in the boat."
Without further ado, the boys then took off but Brent was keen to thank them and managed to track them down on Facebook later.
"I'll be sending a voucher his way soon," father of two young kids Brent said.
Dad certainly was the hero when he returned back from his fishing trip.
"A one-metre mulloway was much better than a bream," Brent reported.
"And very good eating for our family and a few neighbours.
"I was pretty chuffed with myself
"I've only just got the boat and haven't been doing that well to be honest."
Brent seems to be finding his feet though - and not on the steering wheel.
"I was out this morning [Thursday] and got a 42cm bream so I'm starting to get the hang of it.
"As far as the jew went, I would have been happy just to get one, but for it to be over a metre, I couldn't believe it."
Season greeting
It's been a pretty average week weather wise, but anglers should be getting excited as we head into a full moon next Tuesday and the Spring equinox on September 23 (Thursday).
In simple terms, the Spring equinox means that from September 23 in the southern hemisphere, the days will start being longer than the nights.
These events should stir up the fishing and with any luck the showers we've experienced this week will pull back off this weekend offering some nice fishing options.
"Saturday might be a little damp - not that much - but Sunday and Monday are looking good," Jason "One For" Nunn, from Fishermans Warehouse said.
"Sea conditions look quite favourable, and on the back of those big swells we've had last week, and a nice high tide ticking in early morning and late afternoon this weekend, I'm thinking the rocks and beaches will be fishing well.
"There's been some nice tailor caught on the beach this week so this weekend it might be worth throwing a few chromies or pillies.
"Luderick are starting to move back out around the ocean rocks now that the spawning season is coming to a close, and anglers have been reporting some BIG luderick balling up.
"Also some big schools of salmon."
Inshore opportunity
Conditions are fairly favourable inshore this weekend, although again, we can't go out too far at the moment due to Covid restrictions.
"We just have to keep doing things sensibly as most anglers have been throughout the current lockdown period," Jason said.
"Having said that, on that afternoon tide there will be a few reds on offer, flathead and trevally, particularly as the water is a bit cooler. And again, there will be salmon.
"Most of us are itching to get out wide and it will come one of these days, but again we have to be patient.
"Reports off Nowra this week suggest it's been some of the best yellowfin fishing seen in a lifetime, just three miles off the coast.
"It could be happening off our coast too but we won't know."
Jason also expects estuary fishing to fire up in the lead-up to the full moon.
"Already this week we've seen a few mulloway," Jason said.
"There's been a few flathead and tailor moving around inside too."
Stormy weather
Anyone keen for a fish should get it out of the system this weekend.
A major cold front currently pummeling Perth at the moment is tipped to travel across the country and hit the east coast by Tuesday or Wednesday.
"It looks like a really strong system," Jason said.
"The mercury is going to drop again and they're talking about six metre seas.
"So I advise to get out this weekend while the sun is shining and have a crack.
"After a few years where the seasons seemed to be a bit out of kilter, it feels like things are falling back into that familiar rhythm."
