A police officer will face court in the Hunter next month after he was charged with assault following an investigation into an alleged incident last year.

The 54-year-old senior constable - who is attached to a police district in the Northern Region - was issued a Court Attendance Notice for common assault on Wednesday morning.
It will be alleged in court that the officer assaulted another man in the Hunter Valley, while on duty on September 13, 2020.
The senior constable is due to appear before Kurri Kurri Local Court on November 23.
Police said in a statement on Thursday the officer had been suspended from duty with pay.
