Mr Boyce, who was elected to the federal seat of Flynn, said Russia's invasion of Ukraine had exposed the issue of energy security.

In his first speech to parliament, the Queensland MP said the 2050 target set by the international community at last year's Glasgow climate summit had become impractical since the invasion.

"It's quite clear that carbon emissions commitments made at Glasgow are now viewed by many to be nothing more than aspirational virtue-signalling agreements that are unrealistic and unachievable in the real practical world given the geopolitical events of recent times," he said on Thursday.

"Here in Australia, we seem to ignore the lessons being learned in Europe."

Mr Boyce called for Australia to retain its fossil fuel industry as a safeguard in the face of disrupted energy supply.

"The world is demanding more coal, gas, petroleum and nuclear," he said.

"Nobody is asking for more wind turbines or solar panels. And the reason for that is simple ... the world is reliant on fossil fuels and nuclear for its energy.

"We are preparing to legislate carbon emissions targets and make them law.

"We as a nation are proposing to phase out the coal-fired power generation sector while the rest of the world are building and demanding more."

The coalition has taken on the 2050 climate target as policy but is opposed to the Labor government's legislation.

Mr Boyce's electorate contains emissions-intensive industries in central Queensland, including the industrial city of Gladstone.

He also questioned the reliability of the science of climate change and challenged modelling that predicts catastrophic impacts.

"It is preposterous to suggest that computer models can predict the climate future when input data and parameters are manipulated, flawed and wrong," he said.

"Climate is changing as it always has for billions of years since the dawn of time."
