A SPEAR fisherman has been winched to safety after getting into difficulty while diving off the popular Tomaree headland at Port Stephens. Emergency services were called to a rock platform at the base of the headland on Monday morning after the 65-year-old had been dragged from the water. The man was reportedly suffering immersion. The Westpac rescue helicopter was called and winched a medical team to treat the patient. Once stabilised, he was winched out in a rescue stretcher and flown to John Hunter Hospital. He was reported to be in a stable condition.
