Kazuma Honda has bridged language and cultural barriers to find his calling as a clinical professional and scholar.
Growing up in Nagoya, Japan, Kazuma followed his partner to Australia, studied nursing at TAFE and worked as an Endorsed Enrolled Nurse before using his TAFE qualification to complete a bachelor of nursing at the university’s Central Coast campus.
In 2012 Kazuma was the first nurse to be awarded a Prime Minister’s Australia Asia Outgoing Endeavour Undergraduate Award, to study and research as a guest of Yamaguchi University in Ube, Japan.
“Since working as a registered nurse, I’ve realised there is a big difference between knowing something as a result of experience and knowing it because you have a solid foundation in theory and can apply that knowledge to your work,” says Kazuma.
“My TAFE qualifications put me on a path that I could use to complete a degree, and together my qualifications have equipped me to be the professional I am today.”
Kazuma is now working as nurse in charge at a private aged care facility at Erina on the Central Coast and has established a not-for-profit organisation to support ageing Japanese people living in Australia.
