DR McEWAN IS A WIRADJURI WOMAN WHO GREW UP in Mudgee, NSW, and is currently the district medical officer in obstetrics and gynaecology and emergency at Port Hedland Hospital.
Her impressive CV includes being named National Rural Faculty Registrar of the Year in 2009 by the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners and the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine Registrar of the Year in 2010.
She justified her Special Entry as an Indigenous Student to University of Newcastle Medical School intake in 2000 by graduating in 2004, and has since completed a certificate in sexual health and family planning, diplomas in obstetrics, gynaecology and paediatrics, courses in sexual assault management, severe trauma, neonatal resuscitation and foetal monitoring.
Dr McEwan has set her sights on becoming more effective in teaching medical students and junior medical officers, and lobbying governments to improve incentive packages to attract more doctors to live in remote areas.
