The call for help came at about 10.30am when a witness saw a 62-year-old fisherman washed into the water at Timber Beach on Snapper Point Road.
Surf Life Saving Crews, the Westpac Rescue Helicopter and Police Marine Rescue are searching for the missing man.
A Westpac Rescue Helicopter spokesperson said the fisherman is believed to have been swept into a sea cave.

The Newcastle Herald understands the Polair police helicopter and divers may be enlisted to help with the search.
Paramedics treated the person who placed the initial Triple Zero call for shock at the scene.
The missing man is believed to have been wearing a life jacket and was fishing with his son-in-law when the incident occurred.
