The State Crime Command's Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad launched an investigation last month following reports that a 15-year-old girl had allegedly been sexually assaulted by a man known to her near Newcastle.
Police on Saturday confirmed details of the arrest and charges. They arrested a 22-year-old at Beresfield on Friday and executed a search warrant at a Belmont home soon after.

Detectives also seized two vehicles for forensic examination during the search.
The man, a youth group leader, allegedly assaulted the girl on several occasions in April and May this year, police say. Investigators charged the man with two counts of intentionally sexually touching a child aged under 16 and seven counts of aggravated sexual intercourse with a child under 16.
Police said on Saturday the man had been stood down from his youth group leadership role.
