Hughes and fellow Newcastle regular Tom Ison have 75 winners each for the season to sit equal second, five behind Sydney-based Cameron Hart on Friday, in the NSW junior driver standings.

Ison is the stable driver for Central Mangrove trainer Roy Roots jnr, while Hughes does the same job for leading Hunter trainer Clayton Harmey.

Hughes believed Rollin Jayjay in race six was his best chance on Saturday night. The four-year-old won his first start for Harmey in March then was checked when second. He then broke in five consecutive races before improving for second last week at Newcastle.

"He goes really good, he just does a lot wrong," Hughes said. "If he can behave, he'll be hard to beat. I think he's gone around only three times without doing anything wrong."

Hughes was also looking to winning chances on two-year-old Skyfall John John, Mister Woodport and Max Power for Harmey.

"[Skyfall John John] goes pretty good and he will probably improve off his first start [when fourth]," he said.

"He's been going good in his trials and in his first start he just followed the pace for a bit of learning.

"[Mister Woodport] ran on good last start [when second]. He sat in the chair, they went pretty quick and he battled along all right. Hopefully he'll get a bit more luck.

"[Max Power] is a pretty nice horse. Last start he led at Tamworth and raced away pretty easy. The start before, I messed up and went a bit slow and got caught napping. Before he went for a spell he was going really good and he's starting to come back to that sort of form."
