Tyrone Thompson, 22, was discharged from John Hunter Hospital on Monday morning after receiving treatment for an injury sustained during the alleged attack on his former girlfriend on Friday night.
Mr Thompson was dressed in prison greens and had his right hand heavily bandaged when he appeared in Newcastle Local Court.
He did not enter pleas to breaching an apprehended violence order at Berkeley Vale on March 24, entering a dwelling with the intention of intimidating the occupant at Mayfield on March 25 and murdering Miss Anderson between 10.30pm and 11pm on the same date.
He did not apply for bail or speak during the brief appearance.
Magistrate Janine Lacy adjourned the case to May 26.
Police found Miss Anderson with significant injuries lying outside her Crebert Street unit following the alleged attack.
Police and NSW Ambulance paramedics tried to save her but she died at the scene.
Her one-year-old son was also found at the scene, covered in blood but physically unharmed.
Local commander Superintendent Wayne Humphrey said the child appeared to have been present during the incident and was being cared for by relatives.
Mr Thompson, who police say had previously been in a relationship with Miss Anderson, was arrested and taken to hospital for a hand injury.
"Her energy and spirit was so significant," the pair said in a shared statement.
"She was the life of the party, and so full of life always."
Flowers with the message "RIP xoxoxo" were left at the address, which remains a crime scene.
A Go Fund Me page has been established to support Ms Anderson's family.
