JOSHUA Maynard fell into the arms of his brother and was dragged into a waiting car after he was shot in the chest by Chad Shedden in a Raymond Terrace street, a Supreme Court jury was told yesterday.

The shooting occurred before midnight on June 29, 2010, and came after four hours of clashes between rival groups, the jury heard.
Chad Ross Shedden, 34, pleaded not guilty to murder, but guilty to manslaughter with his barrister, Carolyn Davenport, SC, telling the jury that Mr Shedden believed he needed to defend himself and his brother, but now realised that his response was excessive.
The catalyst for the shooting was an incident earlier in the night when Joshua Maynard punched and possibly kneed a teenager in the face in a Raymond Terrace street, Crown prosecutor Lee Carr said.
That group of teenagers enlisted John Sheddon who enlisted his brother Chad and at least one other man for further confrontations with Mr Maynard’s group, the jury heard.
Mr Maynard and four others, including his brother Thomas, were in a red Holden Commodore that was attacked by a group of young men and teenagers in Links Road between 10.30pm and 11pm.
Mr Maynard and his friends returned in a blue Commodore, which was driven to Links Road and past about 10 men who lay in wait before the Commodore performed a U-turn and returned to the rival group.
It was set upon with some of the car’s windows being smashed before Mr Maynard got out and was heard to say, ‘‘Who wants to get stabbed, who wants to get stabbed’’, Mr Carr said.
Some witnesses heard Chad Shedden tell his brother to ‘‘get out of the way’’ while other witnesses are expected to testify that Chad Shedden said, ‘‘Do you want to get shot, do you want to get shot’’. He then shot Mr Maynard in the chest.
The trial before Justice Elizabeth Fullerton continues.
