With Novocastrian Omar Khan at the helm, the Guylian Belgian Chocolate Cafe opened late last week, with its official opening on July 8.
The cafe is sure to be a magnet for chocolate lovers, offering an array of the Belgian brand’s chocolates and cold and hot chocolate drinks (including the decadent hot chocolate which comes with a chocolate in the bottom of the cup, ready to melt into the hot drink for a velvety-rich indulgence), chocolate desserts, pastries, ice-cream, waffles and more.
Once you’ve devoured your hot chocolate (be it milk, dark, hazelnut or peppermint) or perhaps a signature Guylian dessert, you can also head home with chocolates, Guylian house blend coffee and cocoa powder or gift hampers if you’re willing to share.
But if you’re not in the mood for chocolate (we won’t judge), the cafe also serves an extensive breakfast, lunch and dinner menu including sandwiches, salads and hot meals.
It also serves Guylian’s own coffee blend which has been specially selected to complement the brand’s chocolates for those after a takeaway coffee or hot chocolate.
Located close to Salty Squid and the Newcastle Movenpick Boutique, just a short stroll from the Maritime Centre, the cafe has room to seat 160 people inside and outside under a sprawling awning overlooking Newcastle’s working harbour.
Honeysuckle resident Khan is the first Guylian Belgian Chocolate Cafe Australian franchisee, with the other outlets open in the country so far owned by the European company.
He was determined to bring the chocolate cafe to Newcastle after seeing a niche market.
‘‘Here in Honeysuckle we have pubs and restaurants, Crowne Plaza and offices, but we don’t have a coffee and chocolate cafe. Guylian was the missing piece of the puzzle,’’ Khan told Food & Wine.
“I have always been a fan of the Guylian Belgian Chocolate Cafe dining experience and the level of service its staff consistently provide,’’ he said.
‘‘Our dedicated team here in Honeysuckle will strive to provide a quality cafe that locals can discover and continue to enjoy all day from early morning right through to the evening.”
Guylian Belgian Chocolate Cafe’s brand and operations director Patrick Freriks, in Honeysuckle last week overseeing the opening of the store, said the Honeysuckle cafe was one of about 30 cafes set to open across the country in the next three to four years. The cafe will be open from early morning to late at night to make the most of the prime waterfront location.
“We encourage residents to come and discover the complete all-day dining experience from morning through to evening,’’ Freriks told Food & Wine.
Honeysuckle Guylian Belgian Chocolate Cafe is at Shop 3, 15-17 Honeysuckle Drive, Newcastle. It is open Sunday to Thursday 8am to 10pm, Friday and Saturday 8am to midnight. Visit: guyliancafe.com.au.
