Both are current councillors, with Cr Coghlan, a 17-year council veteran, fronting a collective of candidates standing under the Independent Lake Alliance banner.
Sitting independent councillors Wendy Harrison and Rosmairi Dawson will recontest their west ward seats, while Emma Hale and Matt Schultz are among new faces in the alliance.
The Liberal Party has nominated four candidates for each of the three wards, with Cr Pauling, Kevin Baker and Nick Jones leading the west, north and east ward tickets respectively.
Running in the number two positions for west, north, and east wards are Johanna Uidam (west), Jack Antcliff (north) and Erin Black (east).
Cr Pauling said he wanted to “bring some real business acumen to the running of Lake Macquarie ... starting with returning the budget to surplus within the next term”.
