Organising charity Got Your Back Sista’s co-founder, Melissa Histon-Browning said the initiative, 1000 People – 1 Voice, was being held to unite all sectors of the community to say “we will not tolerate domestic violence”.
“It’s about the community coming together and saying this is not normal,” Ms Histon-Browning told the Herald earlier this year. “Our community has become hardened to violence and this has created a sense that violence is normal.
“As a peaceful community we need to stand together and say this is not normal and, in regard to women and children that are experiencing domestic violence, that is not right and it is not normal.
“We hope that people who are experiencing violence can see the community stands behind them and they may actually be able to reach out and tell somebody about it, which is taking that first step. We want to work with employers, retailers, community groups, local clubs, all levels of government and interested members of the public.
“Given most of us work with, live near, or are related to someone who has experienced violence in their home or in their lives it is not someone else’s problem. This is our region’s problem and we must do everything in our power to stop it.”
