John Cleary, of Cardiff, was named Citizen of the Year for his work in bringing to light sexual abuse in the Anglican Church.
Mayor Kay Fraser said he earned “the admiration of many” after he gave evidence at the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse.
Mr Cleary said it was now time for the church to show leadership.
“I think it’s important for the church to be authentic and I think to follow through with the recommendations of the royal commission and to prove to the community that the past is now the past,” he said.
Tony Kable was named Young Citizen of the Year.
