Inspector David Waddell said police would patrol the area to try to catch offenders.
He said descriptions of offenders and registration numbers of vehicles involved could give police a starting point.
‘‘If anyone has any information or evidence to suggest who may be committing these offences, they need to come forward and let us know,’’ Inspector Waddell said.
Lake Macquarie MP and mayor Greg Piper said he had heard anecdotal reports of offenders bragging at a Morisset pub about killing kangaroos in the hospital grounds. Two men entered the pub with kangaroo scrotums and a fight erupted after some people took offence.
The Newcastle Herald reported yesterday that the Native Animal Trust Fund believed more than 100 kangaroos had been killed in the grounds in the past six months.
A Hunter New England Health spokeswoman said any incidents were reported to police. Inspector Waddell said he had received only two reports of cruelty to two kangaroos at the hospital in the past six months.
