After 19 years together the Newcastle band announced an ‘‘indefinite hibernation’’ last month. Johns has been seen out and about in his home town in the weeks since.
Van Dyke Parks was a composer for The Beach Boys, and Johns attended his Newcastle show at Lizotte's on Tuesday, accompanied by his model girlfriend Louise Van De Vorst.
The two musicians apparently bonded during the production of Silverchair’s Diorama album. Van Dyke Parks composed orchestral arrangements for three songs on it, including If You Keep Losing Sleep. The duo apparently travelled to Prague where the arrangements were recorded by the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra.
The name of Silverchair’s next album, Young Modern, was also reportedly inspired by a nickname Van Dyke Parks gave to Johns.
