While Michael remains both excited and anxious about the screening of Young Doctors on Thursday, October 27, at 8pm on NBN, his family is no stranger to the spotlight.
His brother is Wallaby halfback Luke Burgess and his grandfather and uncle as well as several cousins are doctors.
While there’s a bit of medical talk at family gatherings, Michael says most of the discussion is about rugby.
Michael has had a long-time affiliation with Merewether Carlton but has stopped playing rugby due to a shoulder reconstruction earlier this year.
Michael is already a qualified dentist, like his father, but after a few years working in the industry he is back at the bottom of the rung as a first-year junior doctor.
His grand plan is to be a maxillofacial surgeon – performing facial and jaw surgery. To achieve this, he must be qualified as both a dentist and a doctor.
The 28-year-old is married to Georgia, a dermatologist and fellow doctor at John Hunter Hospital.
Young Doctors is an eight-part observational documentary series that followed first- and second-year junior doctors, aged in their 20s, at John Hunter Hospital.
The medics, who include Hunter-raised doctor Leila Usher, of Stockton, and Rory Gleadhill who moved to Newcastle with his family from Belfast, lived together in a six-bedroom house at The Hill for the series.
