TWO Hunter businesses have been recognised at the Australian Tourism Awards.
Owned by the Worimi Local Aboriginal Land Council, the tours cover Aboriginal private freehold land in the Stockton dunes.
Chief executive Andrew Smith said they were designed to show what Aboriginal tourism could be.
“Aboriginal tourism is typecast as just being bush tucker, dance and didgeridoos,” he said.
“Our product is culturally authentic and this win is a good reflection of the team’s hard work and commitment to deliver a professional tourism experience.”
The Port Stephens experience has also been chosen for Tourism Australia’s Discover Aboriginal Experiences collective, the only member in the region.
Margan Winery and Restaurant was recognised in two categories at the Australian Tourism Awards, taking out gold in the Excellence in Food Tourism category and silver for Tourism Restaurants and Catering Services.
In the latter, it was beaten out by Victoria’s Royal Mail Hotel.
The awards were presented in Perth on Friday.
