The Survivors and Mates Support Network – aka SAMSN – will host the session to help people learn how best to approach, discuss issues, and support their loved ones.
While survivors were welcome to attend, social worker Tony Phiskie said it was primarily targeted towards their family and friends.
“The impacts of the child abuse, on their family or their friend, also impacts on them,” he said. “So it is important for them to have as much information around the topic, because that can help them to deal with their circumstances too.”
Child sexual abuse could affect adult relationships, create “huge issues of trust,” and lead to drug, alcohol and gambling problems.
“The workshop will explore the impacts of a traumatic event, such as sexual assault as children, on the survivors, and how that can manifest in their adulthood. It will teach them they need to look after themselves too.”
